As these "Blues people" made their way north, the music that they brought with them fused with the sophisticated urban sounds of jazz to create the sound first called "race music" and then later referred to as "rhythm & blues". As this music known as R&B began to gain acceptance among whites, it became split artificially and became known as "rock n’ roll" (for whites only) and "soul" (for Blacks only).As far as we are concerned it’s ALL Classic Soul !!!

That's right, Step By Step had classic soul music before the group made the Brunswick Records LP's! Cuca Records was one
of the first Polka Labels to record soul music in the north, the Step By Step band, featuring Lil Johnnie Gee as lead singer, front man for the group recorded his first single "Time After Time" at age 9. James Kirchstein produced LP's and singles from 1959 until the early 1970s. While the company's bread and butter came from its vast catalog of polka and ethnic LP's, Cuca also recorded pop, rock 'n' roll, rhythm & blues, folk, and traditional jazz, with an output of over 1000 45-rpm singles. Because most of the artists were from Wisconsin or adjacent states, the Cuca recordings present a concentrated view of the area's ethnic and popular music.
